SSMF was founded in 1994 for and by Mastiff lovers, not just exhibitors or breeders, and is a licensed non-profit organization. In 2005, SSMF achieved its long-time goal of establishing a separate 501C(3) charitable trust, Southern States Mastiff Rescue, which is now an active and highly efficient organization consisting of a board of trustees and many dedicated volunteers whose sole mission is to help Mastiffs in need in the southern region, often working jointly with Mastiff rescue organizations in other regions to achieve this goal.
SSMF works to achieve its goal of protecting and preserving the Mastiff breed by
-
Encouraging only selective breeding of quality purebred Mastiffs by bringing their natural qualities to fit the breed standard
-
Urging members and breeders to accept the standard of the breed as approved by the American Kennel Club as the only standard of excellence by which mastiffs shall be judged
-
Protecting and advancing the interests of the breed and encouraging sportsmanlike competition at dog shows and obedience matches
-
Conducting matches, obedience trials, and regional supported shows under the rules of the American Kennel Club and the Mastiff Club of America,
-
Providing continuing education for both novice and experienced Mastiff owners,
-
Publishing a newsletter to exchange of news, views, and helpful information among its members,
-
Supporting the rescue efforts of Southern States Mastiff Rescue (SSMR)
SSMF holds an annual meeting at one of our supported-entry shows, along with sponsoring regular activities with other Mastiff owners and Mastiff breed clubs. As always, education of the public and new owners is also foremost on our agenda.
Currently, SSMF includes the states of FL, GA, SC, NC, TN, AL, MS & VA. While SSMF is limited to sponsoring supported entries at shows within its own region, membership is open to Mastiff lovers everywhere.
